ReignFCThis big news just in from the club:

Seattle Reign FC has acquired forward Sydney Leroux from the Boston Breakers in exchange for midfielder Kristie Mewis, goalkeeper Michelle Betos and Reign FC’s first-round and second-round selections in the 2015 NWSL College Draft.

Leroux tallied 11 goals and two assists in 19 appearances (all starts) for the Breakers in the 2013 NWSL season. The U.S. Women’s National Team forward accounted for the game-winning goal in four of Boston’s eight wins on the season. Leroux’s 11 goals ranked tied for second in the league behind only Lauren Holiday who finished with 12.

“This will be a big change for me, but one I am really excited about,” Leroux said. “I’m looking forward to getting the chance to play for Laura Harvey and be a part of what she’s building in Seattle.

“I truly enjoyed my time in Boston and I want to thank the Breakers fans for all their support. I have a lot of great memories from time with the club. Now I’m looking forward to being closer to my family in the Pacific Northwest.”

Leroux joins Reign FC after torrid finish to the 2013 schedule with the U.S. national team. She scored three goals in the team’s final two games of the year, including a first- half brace against Brazil on Nov. 10. Leroux also netted four goals in a 7-0 win over Mexico earlier in the year. She finished 2013 with 10 goals for the USWNT, giving her 24 for her international career.

“Sydney Leroux is one of the world’s best forwards,” coach and GM Laura Harvey said. “She is a young, extraordinary talent with unlimited upside. Sydney will be the consistent goal-scoring threat that we struggled to find last season.“

Leroux is a native of Surrey, British Columbia, Canada and graduate of UCLA. In her final year as a Bruin in 2011, she led the team in scoring for the third consecutive season scoring 16 goals with 3 assists. Those numbers earned her NSCAA First-Team All- American and Soccer America’s MVP First Team honors. Leroux was also named as a Hermann Trophy semi-finalist in that same season.

Kristie Mewis was acquired by Reign FC in a trade with Kansas City FC on Oct. 24, but she never appeared in a match for Seattle. Michelle Betos was with Seattle during the 2013 NWSL season and made seven starts, allowing 14 goals with a 0-6-1 record.

“Despite playing behind Hope for much of last season, Michelle Betos was a major part of our club. She was a tireless worker, an incredible teammate and a player any coach would want on their club,” Harvey said. “Boston should feel lucky to have her and we truly hope she finds success with the Breakers.”

“At the end of last season we crafted a comprehensive plan to reshape our roster with the intent of building a squad capable of competing at the highest level,” Reign FC owner Bill Predmore said. “The trade for Sydney is a massive step in the right direction, but only one of several moves we intend to make before the start of the season. Our supporters should expect more good news in the days and weeks ahead.”
