Two Revs honored; Grajeda top ref

LogoMLSMLS has rolled out four more post-season awards today … no Sounders among the contenders this time.

Here are the releases from the league:

Major League Soccer announced today the Defender of the Year, the Referee of the Year and the Assistant Referee of the Year awards.

2013 Defender of the Year: Jose Goncalves – New England Revolution
Goncalves started all 34 games this season, playing every minute of every game. The physically dominant central defender helped anchor the Revolution’s defense that finished the year tied for third-best in the League. The 28-year-old newcomer also contributed two goals this season, both game-winners.

The award was voted on by media, MLS players and MLS club management based on regular season performance. The other two finalists were Sporting Kansas City defender Matt Besler and LA Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez.

2013 Referee and Assistant Referee of the Year
MLS announced that Hilario Grajeda was voted Referee of the Year, and Kermit Quisenberry was voted the Assistant Referee of the Year. These two awards were voted on by media, MLS players and MLS club management.

MLS releases 2014 schedule: Sounders open at home with SKC; 4 of 6 Cascadia matches on road

Here is the 2014 MLS regular season schedule, released today.

The league retains the 34-game schedule, which will have Western Division teams play each other three times, plus one game against each Eastern team, with the sites reversed from 2013. That means Seattle will play four of its six Cascadia Cup matches on the road.

The Seattle Sounders FC 2014 regular season schedule was announced today by Major League Soccer, including 13 matches that have been selected to be televised nationally by ESPN or NBC.

March to Soccer Opening Match will be played in Seattle on March 8 as Sounders FC hosts the 2013 MLS Cup finalists Sporting Kansas City on NBC Sports Network, kicking off the league’s 19th season. Three of the first four matches will be played at CenturyLink Field and the first four opponents are Eastern Conference teams.

Seattle’s first Cascadia Cup match of the season is at Portland on April 5 and Sounders FC will play four of six derby matches on the road. The first home Cascadia Cup match is against the Timbers on July 13 and Seattle will host the Vancouver Whitecaps FC on October 10. All three games against Portland will be nationally televised.

Rapids’ Powers MLS rookie of year, Sounders’ Yedlin third; Timbers’ Nagby and LA Galaxy cited for fair play

LogoMLSColorado’s Dillon Powers was named MLS rookie of the year this morning, with Sounders defender DeAndre Yedlin coming in third in the voting.

Major League Soccer today announced the 2013 AT&T Rookie of the Year, as well as the Xbox Individual and Team Fair Play awards.

2013 AT&T Rookie of the Year: Dillon Powers – Colorado Rapids
A skillful, dynamic player out of the University of Notre Dame, Dillon Powers established himself as one of the most consistent central midfielders in MLS. In his rookie season, Powers displayed his physical talents and reliability while starting 29 matches and logging 2,457 minutes for the Rapids. The 22-year-old contributed five goals and six assists, second on the Rapids in both categories.

All first-year players in MLS without previous professional experience were eligible for the AT&T Rookie of the Year award, voted by media, MLS players and MLS club management based on regular season performance. The other two finalists were Colorado Rapids forward Deshorn Brown and Seattle Sounders FC defender DeAndre Yedlin.

Sounders U-23’s Earn 1st Round NCAA Victories

Tacoma, WA. – Thursday November 21st marked the start of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament. Sounders U-23 talent from eight schools made the tournament and five of them played in Thursday’s first round action.
University of Akron-
University of Akron beat University of Indiana 3-2 in their first round matchup off a 48th minute game winner. Akron quickly went up 3-0 with Sounders U-23 Aodhan Quinn scoring a goal and assisting on the team’s game winner.

Two Sounders among MLS honors finalists

Sounders defender DeAndre Yedlin and forward/midfielder Lamar Neagle were among the finalist for MLS postseason awards announced today — Yedlin for rookie of the year, and Neagle for comeback player.

Major League Soccer today announced the finalists for its 2013 awards. The winners for each award will be revealed in the coming weeks.

The finalists, listed in alphabetical order below for each award, earned the most votes in polling of three voting groups:

· MLS Clubs (Coaches, Technical Directors, Chief Business Officers and PR/Community Relations)
· Media members

Evans signing wraps up Sounders’ “triumverate”

Seattle Sounders FC has wrapped up what general manager Adrian Hanauer calls its “triumvirate of leaders” as the club plans for the 2014 MLS season and beyond.

Tday the Sounders announced the signing of midfielder, defender and sometimes-captain Brad Evans to a contract extension. The move came a day after club MVP Osvaldo
Alonso was signed to a long-term designated player contract and follows the August signing of U.S. national team captain Clint Dempsey.

Hanauer had signaled the club’s commitment to the three players soon after the 2013 season came to a disappointing end in the Western Conference semifinals.

“Without going into detail, I think it’s highly likely that Clint, along with Ozzie, along with Brad Evans form a triumvirate of leaders on the team going forward,” Hanauer said at the time. “Along with a number of other guys on the team, we feel like we have a very good core going into the off-season.”

And with that taken care of, the off-season could be about to get very interesting.
