Schmid: Quick turnaround beats long off-season

It’s one training session down and one to go for the Sounders before they return to the pitch Wednesday for their knockout match against the Colorado Rapids.

The guys who played a lot in the 1-1 draw with Los Angeles last night didn’t even take the pitch today, while the reserves did light work.

Here’s some of what coach Sigi Schmid had to say after:

On the fresh start of the playoffs: Nine teams are done. We’re one of 10 teams that are still playing. It’s an old mantra I keep saying: You can’t win it unless you’re in the playoffs. We’re in the playoffs. We’re starting in the same position as L.A. last year, a similar position to Houston. It’s just a matter of putting together a good streak of games.

On starters being limited to regeneration work: It is what it is. We know it’s going to be tough. But it’s tough for Colorado as well. This is where you want to be. You’d rather be doing this – getting ready for a game on Wednesday – that cleaning out your locker.

On his goalkeeper situation (he declined to name a starter): I thought Michael had a good game. It’s like I said: Is he the goalkeeper who gave up nine goals in two games, or is he the goalkeeper who’s averaged less and a goal per game for 40-plus games? I think he’s the goalkeeper who’s averaging less than a goal per game for 40-plus games.

On previous 5-1 loss to the Rapids: We got a bad taste in our mouth from that last game for sure. And we’ve got to make sure we get off to a better start. The start last time was terrible, and be awake on corner kicks. We feel that being at home is a plus for us. I thought we played some good soccer against L.A. on Sunday. I thought there were some good combinations looking at the game again last night – I watched the whole game – and looking at our overall play, I thought it was solid. If we can play in that same manner, I think things will take care of itself.

On players facing two games in four days: Right now you’ve got to play. If you’re ready to play, you’ve got to play. It’s the same thing for (Colorado).

On players who have been dealing with injuries: Leo (Gonzalez) got thought all of training today. Mauro (Rosales) did as well. Oba (Martins) did the majority of training. We’ll see how all of them are tomorrow.
