The Sounders are training in Texas today, so I’m not expecting any particular news from the club.

That means this could be a good time to look at the MLS weekend ahead, especially as it relates to the playoff race.

The Sounders are one of eight MLS teams that could clinch a spot this weekend. They can do so directly by beating Dallas. They can still get in with a draw if the Colorado Rapids lose or tie with Vancouver on Saturday OR San Jose loses or ties with Los Angeles on Sunday.

• Seattle Sounders FC win vs. FC Dallas on Saturday

OR
• Seattle Sounders FC tie vs. FC Dallas on Saturday AND
• Colorado Rapids lose or tie vs. Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday OR
• San Jose Earthquakes lose or tie vs. LA Galaxy on Sunday

OR

Seattle would qualify for the playoffs regardless of Saturday’s result if both the LA Galaxy and Colorado Rapids win.

The Sounders opponent — FC Dallas — already has been eliminated from the playoff hunt, although Sounders coach Sigi Schmid seemed skeptical that makes things easier on his team.

“Dallas is a team where guys are going to have an opportunity to play that maybe haven’t played as much — not quite sure what lineup he’s going to put out there,” Schmid said. “But guys are playing for jobs. When a team doesn’t make the playoffs, players are going to know that there are changes probably coming down the line so everybody’s motivated to go out there and play. It doesn’t make the game any easier.”
