U.S. national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann indicated to reporters today that if Sounders’ designated player Clint Dempsey is healthy enough to play for the Sounders on Saturday, that he will be expected to report for the USA’s final round of World Cup qualifying on Sunday.

Here is a report from the Associated Press, and another from Steve Davis for NBC Sports’ Pro Soccer Talk.

Dempsey and Sounders coach Sigi Schmid had expressed hope that the club would not lose key players such as Dempsey, Eddie Johnson and Brad Evans for duty with a U.S. team that has already qualified for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Klinsmann apparently feels otherwise: ”It’s absolutely not an issue for us,” he said. ”This is World Cup qualifying. We want to end it on a high note.”

The U.S. roster is expected to be announced Thursday.
