Sounders GM pleased with 32,204 for Rapids on short notice; expects more for Timbers on Saturday

The Sounders-Rapids attendance of 32,204 last night was the smallest ever home crowd for a Sounders playoff game. However, general manager Adrian Hanauer said he was pleased with it, considering tickets went one sale only two days in advance.

Hanauer said the club expects more for Portland, but no decision has yet been made to increase the seating capacity if demand exceeds normal supply.

“The reality is selling these games with two days notice or three days notice is tough,” he said. “I’ll imagine you’ll see how tough it is – well, Halloween as well – but see how tough

Sounders GM warns fans to expect “football field pretending to be a soccer field”

With the Sounders playing the Timbers at 7 p.m. Saturday, and the Seahawks playing Tampa Bay at 1 p.m. Sunday, the Sounders say fans should be ready to see a soccer pitch with full NFL gridiron markings Saturday for the first time in club history.

“They should be prepared for a football field pretending to be a soccer field,” general manager Adrian Hanauer said. “It’s the unfortunate reality of a two-professional-team stadium, with the timing. Probably could have avoided this had we done a little bit of a better job collecting points toward the end of the season. But it

Timbers coach respectful of “epic series” for MLS

Portland Timbers coach Caleb Porter spoke for about 18 minutes in a conference call in advance of his team’s Western semifinal series that begins Saturday in Seattle.

Among the highlights:

* He said he respects the epic series for MLS but will try to have his team take it as just another game and series.

* He expects goals could be rare, as they were during the regular season when the Sounders and Timbers combined for four goals over three games, each going 1-1-1.

* He acknowleded Seattle’s playoff experience, but don’t think his team will be at a disadvantage

With Rapids behind, Sounders look ahead to Timbers; “This is going to be fun,” Burch says

Just minutes after the Sounders knocked off the Colorado Rapids, 2-0, on Wednesday, they turned their attention to the Portland Timbers, their opponent in the Western Conference aggregate-score semifinal that will start at 7 p.m. Saturday at CenturyLink Field and conclude at 8 p.m. Nov. 7 in Portland.

Defender/midfielder MARC BURCH This is going to be fun. Hopefully it’s what everybody wants. Portland thinks they kind of have the edge on us right now, and we’ll see what happens in a two-leg series.

Midfielder/defender BRAD EVANS
On if he is already thinking about Portland:

Gspurning explains card, Hahnemann will start vs. Timbers, reserve will come from MLS keeper pool

Here’s some of what the Sounders had to say about Michael Gspurning’s red card tonight… and it’s implications for Saturday.

Marcus Hahnemann will start in goal against the Timbers on Saturday, while Gspurning sits out his one-game suspension. The reserve keeper will have to come from the MLS pool, as Josh Ford remains on the injured list and no roster additions can be made during the playoffs.

MICHAEL GSPURNING
On the red card:
“Sometimes goalkeepers have to make decisions in split seconds … I just wanted to be ready if the ball is bouncing low. We talked about this

Sounders cite success of low seeds in playoffs

Here’s some of what the Sounders had to say tonight after they started what they hope is a long playoff run with a 2-0 win over the Colorado Rapids.

Forward EDDIE JOHNSON
(On his mindset going in to the game…)
“We really wanted to carry the momentum from the first half of last game into this game. We came out and pushed the game from the start. Brad Evans scored a world class goal and we tried to take the momentum from there. All through the season we have worked through adversity, and with [Michael] Gspurning going out we

Rapids: Sounders, fans (and turf) tough combo

Here’s some of what the Colorado Rapids had to say tonight after a 2-0 loss to the Sounders ended their season:

Coach Oscar Pareja
(On the team’s performance…)
“This stadium, against one of the toughest teams in the league, with this atmosphere, to perform the way that they did today, with that energy and that level of commitment with the game, I’m proud of what the boys have done during this season. I feel bad for them because I know they wanted to advance, but that’s the game.”

(On starting German Mera…) “We have two games in three days,
