This just in from the league:

Real Salt Lake forward Alvaro Saborio was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for week 22 of the 2013 MLS season.

Despite a 4-3 loss to the New York Red Bulls, Saborio shined for Salt Lake scoring a hat trick and nearly solidifying a comeback from a 2-0 deficit at Red Bulls Arena.

In the 44th minute, Real Salt Lake’s Olmes Garcia was brought down in the 18 yard box by Red Bulls defender Markus Holgersson. Alvaro Saborio stepped up to the spot and drilled the penalty kick past Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles for his first goal of the game.

Saborio scored his second goal of the game in the 80th minute beating out Robles with a low right footed shot from the center of the box.

Two minutes later, Saborio gave Salt Lake the lead with his third goal of the night when he worked his way around two defenders in the center of the box and blasted a shot to top right corner.

Real Salt Lake are back in action Saturday, August 1 when they take on the Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park at 8:30 pm ET.

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com/.
