The Sounders trained this morning at CenturyLink Field, where they will meet D.C. United on Wednesday.
Coach Sigi Schmid had these personnel updates:
On injuries to Lamar Neagle, Osvaldo Alonso and DeAndre Yedlin: Lamar was able to go through full practice today. Ozzie was able to do an awful lot more. DeAndre went through it. He got sore a little bit toward the end, but said he felt pretty good. So we’ll see how he feels tomorrow.
On their availability for United: We’re hoping two out of three. I’ll make you guess which two.
On the contract status of Mario Martinez: Still a situation of negotiations. … Our expectation was that Mario was going to be back ehre last week, and obviously he didn’t return, so maybe that’s his indication or where he wants to be. … I think we’ll get it resolved here in the next couple of days.
On Eriq Zavaleta: He goes back and plays another game with San Antonio – I don’t know if it’s the fourth or the fifth. They have a chance still at the title. He played very well in their last game: had a goal and an assist and drew a red card … So I think the games have been good for him.
On Panamanian trialist Roberto Chen: He reports to Panama tomorrow. … I think he’s done well since he’s been here in training, so we’ll have to see how it goes from there. … We’ve had an eye on him (since playing against him when he was 17 and playing for San Francisco of Panama), and obviously he did his ACL in between that, so he had to recover from there, and we’ve been waiting for him to heal and to get him back up here so we could have a look at him. It was good for us to get a look at him and get to know him as a person. … He’s a centerback who’s played some at right back as well.
On the release of Ashani Fairclough: Ashani was doing well. It was more a situation where we wanted to make sure we didn’t get caught short on foreign spots as we look into the transfer window, and so that was important for us. It’s not so much Ashani as opening a foreign spot. Ashani did well, but on the pecking order of central defenders – especially with Patrick Ianni getting well – he was down the list, and so it made sense to make that move.
