Roma beats MLS All-Stars, 3-1; Yedlin plays 24 minutes; league to expand to 24 teams by 2020

Roma defeats MLS All-Stars, 3-1. Lone MLS goal came in stoppage time from LA’s Omar Gonzalez.

Sounders’ rookie DeAndre Yedlin came on in the 66th minute. He was active, firing one shot and almost getting his head on a cross that could have resulted in another.

Full information at MLSsoccer.com.

However, MLS commissioner Don Garber almost overshadowed his league’s showcase by announcing at halftime that the league will expand to 24 teams by the end of the decade. The league currently has 19 members, with No. 20 New York City expected to begin play in 2015.

Eddie Johnson says it was good to get away from Sounders, hopes to bring national-team desire back

Johnson
Johnson

In a post below, we reprinted a comment from U.S. national team coach Jurgen Klinsman saying he hopes to see more consistency from Sounders forward Eddie Johnson.

When asked about that today, Johnson said he hadn’t heard that from Klinsmann, and then veered the conversation in an way that sometimes compared his national-team experiences with his club-team experiences.

“Well, he didn’t say that to me yet, so when he says that to me… I don’t read the paper or anything, so my last conversation with him I wasn’t told that,” Johnson said. “What I do want to take back from the national team is what it feels like to be in a locker room full of guys that are willing to battle and fight for each other, everyone putting their egos aside and everyone on board with what we’re trying to accomplish in this organization. I think for me it was good to get away because it was a bit frustrating for me in previous games. So to get in the locker room and get that fight and that hunger and that desire and that commitment back and that winning mentality, I want to bring that back from the national team here in Seattle.”

On if it feels that way in Sounders locker room: “We know how it is here. There are a lot of expectations here. There’s a lot of pressure. You lose one game and sometimes it’s like the end of the world here. We haven’t had the most consistent season, but we’re not doing bad as a team. I think we’re still in good form, good shape. And you know how it is: When you aren’t winning, Read more »

Johnson back, Yedlin expected, Gspurning maybe; Sounders getting closer to fully fit

Eddie Johnson returned to training with the Sounders today (interesting interview coming), and coach Sigi Schmid said he’s eager to take another look at the Johsnon-Obafemi Martins-Lamar Neagle trio on the pitch together … perhaps with DeAndre Yedlin behind them, and perhaps even with Michael Gspurning in goal — perhaps as soon as Saturday vs. Dallas.

Here’s Schmid on the new pieces returning into place:

On Johnson-Martins-Neagle playing together: I still think the possibilities of all three of them being together makes us a better team, makes us more explosive and harder to figure out. But like I said before,

Alonso picked as inactive All-Star, more

Alonso
Alonso

Sounders midfielder Osvaldo Alonso was among 10 players named to the MLS All-Star inactive roster, coach Sigi Schmid announced to the team at training today.

We got a chance to talk to Alonso after training:

“Pretty great,” he said. “I hear the news this morning. I’m happy to be on the All-Star team; always good for my career.”

On if he wishes he were playing: No. Maybe I go to dinner with my family to celebrate.

On the honor of being voted in my MLS players: Always great, you know. Even if you’re not going to play, always being an all star is good for any player in any sport.

And from Schmid: “I think obviously his injury this year and maybe a little bit of missed time on the field hurt maybe hurt him in that final selection. … This wasn’t a year that he got picked for the squad that plays, but he still got picked as an all-star.”

Meanwhile, here’s the release from the Sounders:

Seattle Sounders FC midfielder Osvaldo Alonso has been named an inactive MLS All-Star, MLS announced today.

Earning his third All-Star selection in his five-year MLS career, Alonso, 27, has started all 12 of his appearances in 2013 and recorded an assist against Dallas on May 18. Alonso played 56 minutes in a 3-2 win over Chelsea in the 2012 MLS All-Star Game.

Each year, a minimum of 32 players are named All-Stars and today MLS announced the final 10: Donovan Ricketts (Portland Timbers), Tally Hall (Houston Dynamo), Jamison Olave (New York Red Bulls), George John (FC Dallas), Diego Valeri (Portland Timbers), Rodney Wallace (Portland Timbers), Osvaldo Alonso (Seattle Sounders FC), Juninho (LA Galaxy), Justin Mapp (Montreal Impact), Javier Morales (Real Salt Lake).

Klinsmann post-Gold Cup interview … talks EJ

USSF100Sounders forward Eddie Johnson is expected back at training today, and I expect to have some quotes from him on the blog later today.

Meanwhile, there’s a good post-Gold Cup interview with U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann at USsoccer.com.

Here is Q&A on Eddie Johnson:

ussoccer.com: One of the players who has played his way into the picture in the last year has been Eddie Johnson, a guy that you brought in after the group stage. He made an impact as soon as he came in, but also you played him through the final. What did he do well and what do you like about him as a player?

JK: “With a lot of U.S. based players, it’s about consistency. We got Eddie Read more »
