Here’s a game report from the club:
Seattle Reign FC (0-9-2, 2 points) tied the Western NY Flash (5-2-4, 19 points) Sunday afternoon at Sahlen’s Stadium. Reign FC captain Keelin Winters scored her first NWSL goal and Western NY’s Abby Wambach converted on a penalty kick.
Seattle opened the scoring in the 28th minute with an inside-the-eighteen yard box finish. With her back to the goal, Teresa Noyola dropped the ball to Winters whose shot deflected off a Flash defender and beat goalkeeper Adrianna Franch to the near post.
The Flash almost equalized in the 32nd minute when defender Katherine Reynolds sent a ball deep into the box that McCall Zerboni got a foot on. Her shot deflected off a Reign defender and sailed just above the crossbar.
New signing Kennya Cordner nearly put the Reign up 2-0 in the 47th minute when she ran onto a through ball from Noyola, beat her defender, and fired a low shot past Franch, but her attempt hit the far post and bounced back into the field of play.
Reign FC outshot the Flash in the first half 8-5, but Seattle’s pace slowed down when they went down a player in the 48th minute.
Abby Wambach was brought down in the box by defender Kiersten Dallstream, who was given a yellow card that resulted in a red card as it was her second caution of the night. Wambach finished the ensuing penalty kick past Reign FC goalkeeper Hope Solo.
Despite playing with only ten players for the final 42 minutes, Seattle continued the attack, led by US Women’s National Team and allocated player Megan Rapinoe. It was her first match for Reign FC having just returned from playing for Olympique Lyonnais in Lyon, France.
In the 85th minute Rapinoe carried the ball up the left flank and cut a pass back into the path of Winters, whose run up the middle of the field put her in a similar scoring position as before, but was unable to beat Franch with her shot this time.
Both teams used all three subs in the match, with Western NY making the first change just off the half. Forward Samantha Kerr replaced midfielder Sarah Huffman in the 46th minute. Defender Jenny Ruiz replaced forward Kennya Cordner in the 59th minute and forward Liz Bogus came on for forward Christine Nairn in the 71st. Western NY put in midfielder Jodi-Ann Robinson for forward Vicki DiMartino in the 65th and midfielder Veronica Perez for midfielder Angela Salem in the 73rd. The final substitution of the night came from Seattle when defender Kate Deines replaced forward Teresa Noyola in the 88th.
The Seattle Reign FC will finish a two game road trip this Wednesday, June 26, when they face the Boston Breakers (3-4-3, 12 points) for the first time this season at 4pm PT at Dilboy Stadium.
