The Sounders U-23 will meet the Charlotte Eagles of the USL PRO in the 2nd Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, Tuesday evening. The match will take place at Queens Sports Complex in Charlotte at 4 p.m. PT.

The Charlotte Eagles are unbeaten so far this season in USL PRO league play with a record of 3-0-3. The USL PRO league consists of 13 teams across the United States and Caribbean.

In last year’s U.S. Open Cup, The Eagles experienced a successful run all the way to the quarter finals defeating the El Paso Patriots of the PDL, FC Dallas of the MLS, and the San Antonio Scorpions of the NASL along the way. They were eventually defeated by MLS club, Chivas USA in the quarters.
In their first round match up against Doxa Italia, the Sounders U-23 scored five first half goals on their way to a 5-1 victory. Forward David Geno lit up the scoreboard notching four of the Sounders U-23’s five goals.

Since the Sounders U-23’s hot start in the U.S Open Cup, the Sounders have fallen twice in their opening two matchups of the PDL league season. Last Thursday they lost a frustrating match at the Portland Timbers U-23, 2-0, in which the Sounders out-shot and had more corner kick opportunities than their opponents. Then on Sunday afternoon they fell 4-1 to the current leaders of the Northwest Division, Victoria Highlanders FC.

Despite the slow start to their league regular season, the Sounders U-23 remain a dangerous side capable of scoring in bunches.

Head coach, Darren Sawatzky said, “The Northwest Division is very competitive and playing away against two good teams this week has been a challenge. We look forward to getting our compliment of college players in and settling our group in for the league season.”

If the Sounders U-23 can pull off the upset on Tuesday, they will advance to take on the Chicago Fire of the MLS in Chicago on May 28th. If the Eagles can hold court and defeat the Sounders, they will play the Chicago Fire at home in Charlotte on May 29.
