Rogers trains with LA, Schmid wishes him well and would rather see him with Sounders

Robbie Rogers trained with the Los Angeles Galaxy as a “special guest” today, about 10 weeks after revealing he is gay and announcing that he was retiring from professional soccer.

“I think it’s great for Robbie,” Sounders coach Sigi Schmid said today of Rogers possible return to MLS. “I’ve known Robbie a long time. I’ve known Robbie since he’s been 9 years old. For him and his situation, I think the league is accepting of that. I think your sexual preference is not something that should determine how good you are as a player or your abilities as a player. He’s proven himself as a player, and that’s what he should be judged on. When he’s on the soccer field, that’s all that matters: how he does as a soccer player. I’m happy for him. I know he feels much happier now that he’s been able to express himself, and I hope his comeback goes well. I hope he doesn’t play for the Galaxy; I rather see him play for us, but I think his rights belong to Chicago.”

Schmid was asked if the Sounders are interested enough to call the Fire to inquire about what it would take to get Rogers’ rights.

“We’ll see,” he said. “I don’t think Read more »

Zakuani issue groin, not blood

Sounders midfielder Steve Zakuani jogged on the side today, one day after missing training entirely due to a blood test.

However, after training coach Sigi Schmid clarified that the issue today is a groin injury and not anything to do with the blood-test results. Yet the groin injury apparently is significant enough where Zakuani’s status for the Saturday game at Philadelphia isn’t yet known.

“I didn’t mean to alarm the world when I said he needed to go in for a blood test,” Schmid said. “It wasn’t anything major. So he was out here. Djimi did more today. Burch

Sounders schedule gets busy starting Saturday

After a lazy end to the month of April, things will pick up considerably for Sounders FC in May, starting with their match Saturday at Philadelphia.

Sounders not full strength even after bye week; Zakuani undergoes blood test

The Sounders returned to training after a rare in-season weekend off.

Eddie Johnson (hamstring) was back and work and afterward sounded ready to face Philadelphia on Saturday. Also at work was DeAndre Yedlin, back after a week away with the US U-20 national team. However, there were still a lot of players missing or restricted, including Obafemi Martins, Steve Zakuani, Djimi Traore and Josh Ford.

Zakuani was the main surprise, as coach Sigi Schmid explained he went in for an apparently non-routine blood test following an apparently routine health checkup.

“Zakunai had to go in (for) a scheduled blood test for him that this was the only time they could do it, and then wanted to get it done before he went through training again,” Schmid said. “… Something came up that they wanted to do that test this morning before practice. He was already here for practice and we had to send him in.”

Sounders 15 pts. from top, six from playoffs

MLS042813It was inevitable that the Sounders would lose points in the MLS standings this week, as they were idle while the rest of the league was active.

The damage for now: 15 points south of Dallas in the Supporters Shied race, six away from RSL and Chivas USA in the Western Conference playoff race, and three behind Colorado to climb out of the Western Conference basement.

That final one could change as the Rapids visit Houston this afternoon.

It should be noted that the Sounders have played the fewest games in the league (although only one fewer than East-leading Montreal and West No. 2 LA). That makes it important for them Read more »
