The move that had been expected for about a week became official today: The Sounders have parted ways with midfielder Christian Tiffert, apparently buying out his contract hours before the new MLS season is to begin.
Tiffert was signed as a DP on July 27, 2012, after more than 280 appearances in German Bundesliga. He played in 12 league games with 11 starts, recording three assists. He contributed another assist in the four playoff games, all of which he started.
Tiffert’s departure leaves the Sounders with two designated players — Mauro Rosales and Shalrie Joseph — and creates an opening that could be filled by Obafemi Martins. Tiffert also joins a list of former Sounders DPs including Freddie Ljungberg, Blaise Nkufo, Alvaro Fernandez, and — I guess — Fredy Montero.
In other news, the Sounders announced the jersey numbers of three new players: Shalrie Joseph will wear No. 21, Dylan Remick will wear No. 33, and Djimi Traore will wear No. 19.
