Joseph: “Four midfielders, two spots”

Since even before Shalrie Joseph joined the Sounders, the club has spoken of his versatility, his ability to play forward, midfield or central defense. And Joseph has said he’s willing to help in any of those spots.

However, today for the first time he spelled out more clearly that he sees his role as a central midfielder.

“I’ll be in the middle of midfield, definitely,” he said. “Whether it be with Brad (Evans), or it be Andy Rose or it be Ozzie (Alonso), whoever it is in the middle, it will be four of us competing for those two spots. That’s what’s going to make practice fun, and that’s what’s going to make each and every one of us better – even Ozzie, being so great as he is now, he’s going to push everyone to get to that level. We have four talented midfielders, so week in and week out he might be changing it up. You never know who’s going to be in there. But at the end of the day, all of us want to win, all of us want to compete, and that’s what is going to make this team better.”

Sigi Schmid again mentioned Joseph’s versatility today. However, when told of Joseph’s comment, Schmid pretty much confirmed the plan.

“I think that’s where his strength is,” Schmid said. “He’s a good organizer, and he’s a good talker. He’ll give you that if he plays in the back, but he’s played midfield for so many years, and the defending that you do in midfield is different from the defending that you do at center back. For him, that might be too much of change. It’s something we’ll see once he’s (fit). He was only really in at the beginning of practice. We need to take care of his calf, we need to get him fit as I said earlier. But I think once his fitness is there and he’s playing every day, I think that will make those determinations a lot easier.”
