Greetings from Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium in Tucson, where the third session of the Desert Diamond Cup is about to begin. First up will be Real Salt Lake against the New England Revolution. That will be followed around 6 p.m. (PT) by the Sounders match against the New York Red Bulls.
I’m in Tucson for tonight through the DDC championship game on Saturday, along with the friendly against Veracruz on Friday.
The picture above shows the view from the press box, and its angle indicates this stadium’s origins as a Pacific Coast League baseball park. It was born as Tucson Electric Park, when it was the Cactus League home to the Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago White Sox and the PCL Tucson Sidewinders. Now it’s being used as the centerpiece of Tucson’s soccer expansion, and remains home to the PCL Tucson Padres (who were the Portland Beavers before that stadium was renovated into a soccer pitch for the Timbers).
I’ll be back with more as the evening moves along.
