Sounders win clinches spot in Cup final

2013DDClogo Sounders win, 2-1, on second half goals by Mario Martinez and Phillip Lund. RSL got its goal in the 87th minute on a rebound shot by John Stertzer.

With the win, Seattle moves to 2-0 in the Desert Diamond Cup and that clinches them a spot in the final next Saturday, regardless of the result when they resume Cup play Wednesday against Real Salt Lake.

Goals:Sounders jump ahead 2-0 on goals by Mario Marinez and Phillip Lund.

If the Sounders hold on, they clinch a spot in the championship game Saturday.

Second half: … has begun. Sounders open with Gspurning, Yedlin, Fairclough, Scott, Remick, Martinez, Alonso, Rose, Caskey, Lund, Ochoa.

Halftime: Scoreless. Ten of the 11 Seattle starters went the whole way. The exception was Adam Johansson, who came out around the 38th minute. Homegrown player DeAndre Yedlin took his place and started making things happen.

Lots of Seattle changes expected for second half.

Pregame: Sounders FC meets Real Salt Lake in each team’s second match of the Desert Diamond Cup today at 3 p.m. The game will be streamed live on SoundersFC.com and MLSsoccer.com.

Here’s the Sounders’ starting lineup, which has the look of a real first XI: G Gspurning; D Johnasson, Scott, Hurtado, Gonzalez; M Rosales, Alonso, Evans, Zakuani, F Estrada, Johnson.

RSL is opening with: Rimando, Beltran, Schuler, Watson-Siriboe, Mansally, Beckerman, Alvarez, Velasquez, Grabavoy, Saborio, Plata.
