In addition to the four games againt MLS clubs in the Desert Diamond Cup, the Sounders now have added a CCL tuneup against Mexican club Veracruz. That will come Feb. 22, sandwiched between the DDC games with New York on the 20th and the championship or third-place game on the 23rd.
(Traveling fans also might be interested to note that the Varacruz game falls on the same day that the Seattle Mariners play their first Spring Training game in Peoria.)
Here’s the release from the club:
The Seattle Sounders FC will play Mexico’s Veracruz in a preseason friendly on Friday, February 22 at 6 p.m. PT (7 p.m. local) at Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Ariz.
“This is good preparation for our match against Tigres,” said Sounders FC Head Coach Sigi Schmid. “It’s important to play another team from Mexico and we are very thankful that Veracruz is able to do so. It’s a good opportunity for our team to play against that style of play because it is different than what we face in MLS.”
Tickets for the friendly, as well as the four-game Desert Diamond Cup, are available at www.FCTucson.com.
Seattle opens its fifth MLS season on March 2 against the Montreal Impact on the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field. Sounders FC will then play Tigres UANL in a two-leg CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal series.
