Here’s an overview of the Sounders’ second Arizona training day, provided by the club:
The second day of training camp at Grande Sports World featured an intense morning session followed by fitness work in the late afternoon.
Head coach Sigi Schmid began the morning session by splitting the team into two groups for a 3v2 breakaway drill. The offensive side had the man advantage in the run of play but the two defenders were backed by a keeper in net. Starting at midfield, the three attacking players would force the defense to commit before passing and finishing on goal. The group then transitioned into a series of short-sided games with four small goals. Two fields featured a 6v6 game with one neutral player, forcing the players to constantly switch the point of attack and make quick decisions despite the fatigue. The four goalkeepers worked with Tom Dutra on the side.
The addition of defender Mason Trafford brought the total to 31 training camp participants as the four players who recently played for their national teams are not in camp and Patrick Ianni remained in Seattle to rehab. Trafford participated in full training in both the morning and afternoon sessions. It was his first time training with the team.
Sounders FC will train once on Friday and will return to two-a-days on Saturday.
