Sounders U-23 will open PDL season at Portland

Sounders-U-23-bloglogoThe Premier Development League announced its 2013 divisions and schedule Friday.

The Pierce County-based Sounders FC U23 will play in the Northwest Division along with the Kitsap Pumas, North Sound SeaWolves, Portland Timbers U-23s, Vancouver Whitecaps U-23, Victoria Highlanders and Washington Crossfire.

Sounders U23 will open its season May 16 at Portland and its home season May 24, meeting Kitsap at Sunset Stadium in Sumner. The schedule lists home games there, at Starfire Sports Stadium in Tukwila, and at Tumwater High School.

United Soccer Leagues released the 2013 alignment and schedule for the PDL today, with the 455-game regular season getting underway on May 4 as LA Misioneros FC faces the Fresno Fuego, the Kitsap Pumas meet Victoria Highlanders FC and the Pali Blues welcome the Ventura County Fusion.

A total of four new teams have joined the PDL for 2013, including the New York Magic – F.A. Euro, the Real Boston Rams, the SW Florida Adrenaline and a franchise in Oklahoma City.

Several teams have announced name changes including IMG Academy Bradenton (IMG Bradenton Academics), K-W United FC (Hamilton FC Rage), the NJ LUSO Rangers FC (New Jersey Rangers), the S.C. United Bantams (Palmetto FC Bantams) and VSI Tampa Bay FC (VSI Tampa Flames).

The PDL will feature 65 teams in four geographic conferences and nine divisions. The Eastern Conference features three divisions while the Southern, Central and Western Conferences feature two divisions each. PDL clubs will again play 16-game schedules in 2013, eight home and eight away. The defending PDL champion Forest City London opens its 2013 campaign on May 18, when it travels to play the River City Rovers.

The top developmental men’s league in North American, the PDL features 65 teams in 2013 within four conferences across the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. The PDL season consists of 16 regular season matches for each team, eight home and eight away, and provides elite collegiate players the opportunity to taste a higher level of competition while maintaining their eligibility. In addition to league play, PDL teams compete in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup as well as various exhibitions. The PDL has proven to be an important stepping-stone for top professionals now playing throughout the world.
