The game — and the Sounders’ fourth season — has come to an end.

The Sounders were entertaining and brave tonight, for a time cutting LA’s series advantage from three goals down to one. But in the end it was a 2-1 win tonight, washed away in a 4-2 loss in the series.

Seattle got goals tonight from Eddie Johnson and Zach Scott, but their chances pretty much ended in the 68th minute when a handball in the box was called on Adam Johansson and Robbie Keane nailed the PK.

The Sounders’ fourth season was their first without a trophy. It was their first not qualifying for CONCACAF Champions League. It also was their first when they did not improve on their MLS point total of the season before.

The primary success was winning their first playoff series, advancing with a road win at RSL. However, that sent them on to the series against the Galaxy, and tonight’s cap to the season.

I’ll be back with notes and quotes.

81st minute: Final Sounders change: Rosales in for Zakuani. Crowd chants “Steve Zakuani.”

75th minute: Yellow to Alonso.

73rd minute: Two Sounders’ changes: Estrada in, Montero out. In Martinez, out Johansson.

68th minute: Adam Johansson called for handball in box. It was certainly ball-to-hand, but Johansson’s arm was away from body. Different refs could call different ways. Robbie Keane nails PK. Sounders 2-1 tonight, LA 4-2 on aggregate.

57th minute: GOAL Sounders. Zack Scott heads in a Tiffert corner. It’s 2-0 on the night; still 3-2 LA in the series.

Attendance: 44,575. Largest MLS postseason crowd other than MLS Cups.

Second half: … is under way. No changes for either side.

Halftime: Sounders 1-0 on the game. LA 3-1 on aggregate with 45 minutes to go.

Shots 7-3 SEA; on target, 2-0 SEA; corners 4-1 SEA; duels 50-50; possession 57% SEA.

13th minute: GOAL Seattle. Eddie Johnson, assisted by Zach Scott. So it’s 1-0 Sounders tonight, 3-1 Galaxy on aggregate.

First kick: … has been struck. Sounders in rave/blue; Galaxy in white/white.

Lineups: For Sounders: GK Gspurning; D Johansson, Parke, Hurtado, Scott; M Tiffert, Alonso, Evans, Zakuani; F Montero, Johnson. Reserves: Hahnemann, Rosales, Estrada, Gonzalez, Martinez, Ochoa, Rose. (Rosales wasn’t on the original 18-man roster we received, but he’s on the pitch warming up, replacing Alex Caskey.)

Starting for LA: Saunders; Franklin, Gonzalez, Meyer, Dunivant; Wilhelmsson, Sarvas, Beckham, Magee; Keane, Buddle. Reserves: Perk, Boyens, Gaul, Juninho, Stephens, Villarreal and Noonan.

Pregame: It is drizzling lightly about two hours before first kick tonight at CenturyLink Field.

At 6 p.m., the Sounders will play for their lives, needing to pick up three goals against the Los Angeles Galaxy for the right to host MLS Cup on Dec. 1 against Houston.

The game will be shown on ESPN, heard on the usual radio outlets, blogged here, and tweeted @donruiztnt.

I’ll be back with news as it happens, perhaps beginning with tonight’s starting lineups and reserves.

Sounders won 3-0 tonight, and tied up the aggregate, but typical MLS officiating gave the Galaxy an undeserved goal while taking an earned goal away from thev Sounders. Watching Beckham pat the ref on the head was just too much. Garber must be proud.
