Sounders say challenge ahead isn’t impossible, not even unprecedented; just very difficult

The Sounders know what kind of hole they got themselves into tonight.

They know because they’ve been there before — last season when they fell behind 3-0 in the first leg of their playoff series at Real Salt Lake and then couldn’t quite overcome it with a 2-0 win at home.

However, they had enough chances in that game where they think coming from three goals down is possible. And several also pointed to the fact that they already have beaten Los Angeles by a greater margin this season: a 4-0 win at CenturyLink Field in August.

Here’s some of what the Sounders had to say about the task awaiting them next Sunday.

SCHMID: We have to understand that we have to score three goals in 90 minutes. We don’t have to score three goals in five minutes or score three goals in 15. And for sure we don’t have to go hog wild scoring goals and giving up goals, because then we just have to score more goals. It’s important that we come out with a good mentality, a good work rate, a good effort on our part, but also a good plan and the patience and the desire at the key moments.

On Salt lake last year: We also take solace in the fact that we beat LA 4-0 at the beginning of the year at our place. We know we’ve got to come out with the same kind of effort that we came with the last time that we played at home last year.

Goalkeeper MICHAEL GSPURNING
On the Sounders back four: We did well. If the first goal doesn’t happen, I think things would be different. I’m sure that we don’t deserve this result today, but OK, we have this result now. There is just one direction we can play now and that is forward.

EDDIE JOHNSON
We’re a good team at home. Going down three-zero against the defending champions, it’s tough, but it’s not impossible. We played them this year at our place and we managed to score four goals. But this is the playoffs. It’s different. So we have to go back and watch film and go over some things and come back with a better mentality next week.
