Here’s some of what coach Sigi Schmid said tonight about his lineup, including the loss of defender Marc Burch due to league disciplinary suspension for use of a gay slur during the Thursday match at Real Salt Lake.

On the lineup: “What we wanted to do was congest midfield a little bit and make it more difficult to possess the ball more. Again, I think when you look at the stats and you look at the possession, even in the first half, I thought we did a good job. It was exactly what I wanted to do. We were one minute away from having it go the way we wanted it to go. We didn’t think Eddie was able to go 90 minutes, so we wanted to bring him off the bench in the second half when they were a little tired, and be sure that he could go 90 minutes next week because he’s making good progress, and it’s tough with the amount of time he played in Salt Lake with that turnaround for him.”

On missing Burch: “Obviously Marc has played very well for us and we’re disappointed for him not to be able to play today. Him and Leo (Gonzalez) have been our left backs for the majority of the season. Zach (Scott has) played more on the right and more in the middle, so for him it was a tough situation to step into. And he hadn’t played that much over the last three weeks, so it was difficult for him.”

On the suspension: It is what it is. Obviously it was consistent with what happened with Colin Clark even thought there was no audio of it. I’m proud of the fact that Marc felt his obligation as a human being – not necessarily as a soccer player for the Sounders, but as a human being – to acknowledge that he made a mistake. … It’s not something in his character to do. But it is what it is.”
