Sounders defender Marc Burch has issued an apology through the club, after he was caught using a gay slur during the telecast of the win at Real Salt Lake last night:

“I apologize for my horrific choice of words last night during our match. This is something that is inconsistent with my family values and because of that I am both disappointed and embarrassed by my level of poor judgment. I take seriously my role as a leader in the community and this is completely regrettable and unacceptable. Character matters and I hope through hard work on and off the field to begin earning your respect and trust again.”

No word on league discipline yet, but that seems likely.

Here is a report from MLSsoccer.com.

With so many possible expletives to choose from in the American vernacular, it’s just plain dumb to go the route of the homophobic slur.

For example, Becks shouted F Off to Sounders fans at the end of the game in LA, and routinely tells the Refs to do the same. (No fine, no nothing,)

Burch is 3 and out for the run to the Cup.

Too bad, we could have used him v. LAG.

ehh its hard too get that angry at an athlete for using words people use in everyday life. Yes its wrong, but words like that and the “N” word have become less a word directed at the actual person described, and more a general insult against anyone.
