“Progress” for Rosales, but no certainty; potential 120-minute game affects lineup decisions

The Sounders are off the training pitch for another day.

Eddie Johnson and Mauro Rosales both trained some, but were taken off early. Schmid says Johnson still on track to play Thursday, while Rosales’ status is still questionable despite “progress” on his hamstring.

“Eddie trained, we just didn’t want him to go too long because we still have some time before the game,” Schmid said. “He was in everything in training, and halfway through our stuff and then I pulled him out just before the end because I wanted to pull him out. Leo’s making good progress. Ianni’s staying about the same.”

Schmid acknowledged that lineup decisions for Thursday will keep in mind the possibility that it could be a 120-minute match.

“You’ve got to think about that,” Schmid said. “Obviously you want to make sure that you’re starting people who have the capability of going 90-plus minutes. So you don’t want to start too many players who you don’t think can go 90 minutes, because if that’s the case, then you’re locked into some subs. And then … if somebody gets injured or something happens, then you’re in trouble. So, that’s going to affect our lineup at the end of the day.”
