Sounders’ ticket sales to 30,500; no major EJ update

The Sounders are off the training pitch for another day.

Eddie Johnson did not train with the team, and coach Sigi Schmid indicated OK progress and a continuing day-by-day assessment of the injury. The club also clarified that the injury — which initially was referred to as a hamstring — is actually an adductor strain.

The club also reported 30,500 tickets sold for the playoff opener Friday against Real Salt Lake. The current seating configuration seats about 35,000 in the lower bowl, and there are no present plans to expand that.

    Lowest attendance of the year (other than the two CCL games) for a play-off game? This is embarrasing…

    @jimkingjr… I respectfully disagree. It’s a game 1, not deciding game on a rainy Friday night after 3 straight years of not advancing. It’ll probably be close to 35K…and it’s only embarrassing to our standards, no one else’s.

    If we advance, you’ll see huge crowd for next series. But we’ve been-here, done-that for this game so I cut the fans a little slack.

    Sounders drew 35,807 for 2009 playoff match, 35,521 in 2010, and 36,021 last season. So, it looks like they’ll really be in their usual ballpark Friday.

    cisco- This isn’t a game one in a five or seven game series where there will assuredly be another home game. This may be it. If we advance, you expect a rainy Monday night on three days notice to present a better scenario for the second round? I doubt anything other than the lower bowl will be opened for the opener against San Jose. It does provide good evidence in support of management not just throwing the place open and hoping for walk-up sales. How do you think the team feels when they see fewer fans come out for the playoffs? Besides, the sun will be out Friday night. Too bad too many of the fans won’t be. No, no slack to be cut.

    Don- would generally agree that they are in their usual ballpark, and it is so much better than any other team, but I still believe drawing fewer fans to a playoff game than are drawn to regular season games is embarrassing. Does that happen in any other sport?

    McLoughlin should be FIRED!!!

    Capping a PLAYOFF game at 35k when we averaged FAR MORE than that in the regular season is an insult to every soccer fan in the region. And there’s a helluva lot of us! McLoughlin has failed this club time and time again, and i’m tired of him! He’s had well over a month to do a “Playoffs marketing campagin”, to get the word out to average sports fan about the playoffs and possible ticket times. He’s done NOTHING! Not one d@mn commerical, advertisment, billboard, anything! You can bet if the sorry Seachickens ever luck back into the playoffs again (HAHAHA, yea right!) he’ll be spending tons of money on “playoffs marketing”! Peter McLoughlin subscribes to the Jim Rome school of thought in that he believes only little girls and communists like soccer. He’s done jackshizz as Sounders President and Head of Marketing in the two years he’s been in charge, and should be FIRED as a result!!

    MCLOUGHLIN OUT!!

    It isn’t McLaughlin’s fault by any means. The lack of information comes from the screwed up MLS- fire Garber, if anyone. But no way they should just throw open the place and hope for sales. The blame falls on the “fans” who have had since 9am Monday to buy- and they ain’t buying. Season ticket holders paid their money without knowing the details- the rest of you have all the details and just don’t care.

    JK: I’ll try to check on playoff/regular season attendance trends in other sports … and even across MLS. However — and I realize this is kind of damning — I know attendance tends to fall in playoffs in minor league sports. It tends to be a matter of having to make the sale all over again: building attendance from zero, sometimes on short notice. The real fans tend to re-up eagerly. But business that buy blocks of season tickets often choose not to invest again, especially in a fourth financial quarter.

    Wow talk about getting lost in the process…I don’t think players will worry too much if it’s 35K or 38K. Don is right, you start playoffs with a zero attendance base. 35K kills it in MLS and lots of other sports. I noticed Chicago fire game was poorly attended and it was 1 game do or die. I wonder if LA game will be sold out tonight.

    I’ve been to all the previous home playoff games but this year I’m not flying up (Living in Reno for 3 years and I still have 4 season tickets).If it was game 2 I would go to see them hopefully advance. Game 1 is like watching the first half of a game. I was happy to be there in the past but I’ll wait for 2nd rd (hoping). I suspect many will do the same, but the notion that 35K is a disappointment simply shows how crazy successful this franchise has been.

    Has anyone seen any marketing for the game? I think they’ve put all their money where their payroll is, which I completely support, by the way.

    Other factors:

    Playing at 7PM on a Friday instead of a mid-day, weekend game takes a few thousand young kids out of the picture (and some parents).

    Playing at the same time that the Huskies play in Berkeley likely costs them a few thousand.

    Playing on the Friday before a Sunday Seahawks game probably costs a few more thousand (a Saturday or Monday game would have made it easier for folks coming from outside Seattle to attend both games).

    But yes … all of that being said, we’ll still have set the #1 attendance mark (again) for any MLS team’s first (or second) playoff game of 2012.
