Sounders training today: Evans, Hahnemann, Martinez … along with Marathon and Galaxy

The Sounders are off the pitch for another day, and there were no shortage of topics afterward. I’ll cover some of these topics in more detail later, but highlights included:

*Brad Evans named MLS player of the week. He says such awards don’t really matter to him, but he thinks his teammates share in it. Sigi Schmid credits Evans versatility and work ethic.

* Mario Martinez seemed to back off of his tweets from last night that indicated his lack of playing time here has caused him to want to leave. He says he wants to stay and contribute. Schmid — in his briefest answer of the press meeting — said he and Martinez will talk.

* Schmid said he hasn’t decided if Marcus Hahnemann will start in goal Wednesday against Marathon. Hahnemann said he feels ready, and that getting a start would mean a lot to him.

* Schmid also said that both of this week’s games have meaning. Even though the Sounders have clinched the group, he wants to improve quarterfinal seeding with a win over Marathon on Wednesday. Even though the Sounders have clinched at least No. 3 seeding in the MLS Western Conference playoffs, he wants to claim the second seed with a win at Los Angeles on Sunday.

“There’s meaning in both games,” Schmid said. “The meaning for us in the first game on Wednesday is it affects our seeding as we go into the quarterfinals. Determining whether we’re going to get one of those top three or four seeds or one of the bottom four seeds determines who you’re going to play in the next round. Obviously there are some guys you’d like to avoid. We’re one of the teams that has the potential to get 12 points, and if we do that that means we’ll get one of the top three seeds. And so that makes the game important from that aspect.

“Sunday’s game, again a win for us makes it that we would get second place – unless Real Salt Lakes has a real big huge victory against Vancouver. So from that standpoint, second place is always better. But the other reason 59 points are important is when you now compare that point total with what some of the point totals will be in the East, and depending on who comes out of there, if we go far in the playoffs … it could affect where MLS Cup gets played.

“So there are games – yeah – that don’t get us in the playoffs, it doesn’t get us into the next round in CONCACAF, but they are games that are still important from the standpoint of seeding and placement.”

I hope things are sorted out with Martinez. He’s clearly got enormous potential, but that’s not the sort of way to endear yourself to the FO or supporters.
