Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid was suspended and filed by the league today for his criticisms of referee Ricardo Salazar after the club’s scoreless draw with Real Salt Lake on Wednesday.

Here is the release from the league:

Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber today suspended Seattle Sounders FC Coach Sigi Schmid for one game and fined him $2,000 for inappropriate public comments about the officials during and after his team’s game against Real Salt Lake on Oct. 17.

“Sigi Schmid’s comments earlier this week about the officiating were unacceptable,” MLS Commissioner Don Garber said. “MLS requires that its players, coaches, and club leadership maintain proper respect for the officials at all times.”

The suspension will be served Sunday when FC Dallas comes to CenturyLink Field. Assistant coach Brian Schmetzer will assume Schmid’s coaching duties.

Sounders FC says it will have no statement regarding the league’s action.

I believe the next ECS tifo should depict an heroic Sigi Schmid being carried on the shoulders of the fans, while in the background Salazar and Garber are shown doing unspeakable acts upon each other.

  2. EverydayFan says:

MLS’ handling of this is what’s unacceptable.

    Nothing about Morales’ embellishment?

Nothing about whether calls were right or wrong?

Nothing about the disparity in fouls (over 2 games) or the corner given at 2:30?

    Mr Garber:
As paying MLS Customers, we require a league where all teams are treated equal, and our coaches receive the respect they deserve.

Who is the customer here? The refs?

  3. SouthHillHooligan says:

Why were his comments “unacceptable”? They were true.

I watch a lot of soccer, I can’t name a single official from any other league, but I know Ricardo Salazar and Kevin Stott because they are terrible referees.

This isn’t just an issue in Seattle:

Hooligan- don’t forget Bartolemo Toledo. What other league has a trio of officials fans can name?
