Sounders work on two-touch, spacing, back four

We’ve already dropped in a few training notes down below. But here’s some more of what coach Sigi Schmid had to say today;

On training today and having more time than usual before a game…) “It allows us to work on some things. Today, we were able to work on just playing some two-touch, our spacing, we were able to work with our back four because going into next game we’ve got some pieces missing out of the back four. Being able to get those guys some time together, getting some shooting in, some finishing in front of the goal. We haven’t been able to do any of those things because of the multitude of games we’ve had. You don’t want to do a lot of shooting in between games because it’s very muscle-intensive, so there’s a lot of things we’ve been able to touch upon this week that we haven’t been able to touch upon in a while.”

On other forwards stepping up while Eddie Johnson is with the US National Team…) “Always. When somebody is out, it’s always an opportunity for somebody else. [Sammy] Ochoa has done very well in the opportunities he’s gotten and has scored goals for us-has played very well I think over the last two-three months. David Estrada is now getting back-got some minutes in the game, as well. For those guys it’s a good chance here coming up in these next two, three games.”

On the progress of David Estrada since returning from injury…) “It’s been good. He feels better. At first, it’s a little bit about timing. You still feel a little bit of pain, but he’s said every day he feels a little bit stronger. You can tell from his running and his movement off the ball that it’s starting to get back to where it was, as well.”

(On having a 10-day break at this point in the season…) “We sort of knew it was coming because of the international fixtures coming up. Actually, the Salt Lake game got thrown into this window, where normally it would have been played at another time. It’s nice to have a break at this time. When we had the other break, we actually worked it out where the guys could get away for a few days. This break, we wanted them to get some time away but we didn’t want them to go away, just to relax at home, so we structured the break a little bit differently. But it’s nice to be able to have some continuity in training and also get some days off and get some rest in.”
