The Sounders are among four MLS teams included in the field of the 2013 Desert Diamond Cup, to be played in February in Tucson. Other participating clubs are the New England Revolution, the New York Red Bulls and Real Salt Lake.

Coach Sigi Schmid said today that the competition provides advantages for his club’s preparations for the resumption of CONCACAF Champions League next spring … and also a nice spring-training-like getaway for Sounders supporters.

“We know we’re in a tournament, we know we’re playing games against MLS teams, we know we’re going to be going, so that part of it’s nice,” he said. “In terms of CONCACAF, we have the freedom within their tournament structure to still try to schedule something outside of it, so we can still try to schedule a Mexican or a Central American team to sort of show that style. We can even try to do something in that area if we wanted to, so those are options that are open to us.

“And it’s also great being able to announce it this early, it’s great for our fans because our fans know where we will be, and if they want to get away a little bit for February, it’s a little bit almost like a spring training thing, so it should be something nice for the Seattle community and the fans of the Sounders.”
