Now that U.S. Soccer has officially named Eddie Johnson its World Cup qualifying roster, coach Sigi Schmid was free to comment on the honor for the Sounders’ leading goal-scorer.

“It was good for Eddie,” Schmid said today. “Obviously he’s worked very hard, and he’s been scoring goals. For him, it’s a great opportunity. We’ll see how things go. I know Jurgen had him on his mind. I thought it probably wasn’t going to happen until the next qualifying round, but circumstances dictated different and he decided to bring him in now. Hopefully it goes well for Eddie, but it’s certainly a chance he deserves based on his performance in league play.”

Schmid also revealed that midfielder/defender Brad Evans is on the national team’s standby list.

But for now, three Sounders are away for duty with their respective national teams: Johnson (USA), defender Adam Johansson (Sweden) and midfielder Mario Martinez.

Schmid came off of earlier stated hopes that two of the three might be back with the Sounders in time for their next match a week from today against Real Salt Lake.

“It’s going to be tough for Johansson, obviously, to get back after the game, just because of the length of the flight and so forth, and what state he’s going to be in physically,” Schmid said. “Mario Martinez, again, you don’t have a ton of flights out of (Honduras) so the options are limited. And if you take the (flight the Sounders took after playing there) you still get in after eight at night, and that’s getting up pretty early. With Eddie it’s a little bit easier coming out of Kansas City, so the opportunities are there to get him back in time for the game.”
