Forget tie-breakers. It’s as simple as this: If Portland wins at Vancouver on Oct. 21 — and it would be the Timbers first road win in more than a year — the Timbers get the Cascadia Cup. Any other result keeps it in Seattle.

With the Sounders now finished with their portion of the competition, coach Sigi Schmid said he was pleased with what they accomplished.

“We put ourselves in the best position possible,” he said. “We’re in a position now that they have to go to Vancouver and win. Anything short of a victory gives the Cascadia Cup back to us. And in a year where we had four of six games on the road, and they had four of six at home, I think that’s a big tribute to our team.”
