Johansson might be only Sounder to miss RSL game due to (real/hypothetical) international duty

Here’s some of what Sounders coach Sigi Schmid had to say today about the Sounders’ international personnel situation — real and hypothetical.

On whether Eddie Johnson — who was at training today — has been called in to the US national team) There’s nothing I can say about that at this stage. That’s an announcement that’s going to be made on Monday. Until the final announcement is made, there’s not much we can say.

On Honduras calll-in Mario Martinez, who wasn’t at training today) Mario is gone because we told him we weren’t going to start him this game, so we decided to let him go earlier. He came up here so quickly after the Olympics, he’s still got some things to take care of down there, it gets him into their training so if he gets good full minutes with their team that’s good for us as well.

On whether they might return in time for the Oct. 17 MLS match against Real Salt Lake) Obviously Johansson plays (Oct. 16) so for him to get back and feasibly play (the next day) is pretty difficult. I don’t think he can fly the same way David Beckham is allowed to fly across continents. Mario, depending on what his flight schedule is, might be back in time to the (RSL) game.

On whether someone called to the USA national team could be back in time for RSL) He should be able to get back depending on the situation, either that night or the next day. It depends how many minutes he played the night before too, so it depends on different options we can explore. … Hypothetically, I expect (RSL’s Kyle) Beckerman to be here, and I expect (RSL’s Nick) Rimando to be here.
