The Sounders returned to training today at Starfire after a couple of days off. Coach Sigi Schmid said he was happy with the way his club began preparations for the Sunday match against Portland.
“I think we needed a couple of days, and I thought practice today was good for having a couple of days off,” he said. “We wanted to work a little bit on some things: We got some work in on some crossing and finishing at the far end, and staying compact defensively. We got that done, and tomorrow we’ll work a little bit harder.”
The club is in generally good health. However, midfielder Osvaldo Alonso was held out today.
“Ozzie’s all right,” Schmid said. “We just wanted to hold him out today. He had a little bit of something going in, and we’ve had a few of our guys who have been sick a little bit from the trip to Honduras. A few of them have had stomach viruses. Ozzie seemed to have something different. It was like a muscle strain, but we weren’t quite sure. He felt better before the game and played, so we figure we’ve got a little bit of time, so we figured we’d give him a little time to get over it.”
