Just before first kick in Portland.

Sounders FC and the Portland Timbers played to a 1-1 draw this afternoon before a crowd of 20,438 at Jeld-Wen Field and an NBC national television audience.

The Sounders scored first in the 57th minute, when Fredy Montero greeted reserve goalkeeper Joseph Bendik with a shot over his head. Bendik had come on just seconds earlier, after Donovan Ricketts went off following a collision with Seattle’s Eddie Johnson.

That was very good new for Seattle, which was 12-0-2 this season when scoring first.

However, the Timbers struck back when Rodney Wallace headed in a Jack Jewsbury corner kick.

The result moves Seattle to 13-6-9 on the season, and Portland to 7-14-7.

Portland remains atop the Cascadia Cup race at 2-0-2. Seattle is second at 1-1-2. Vancouver is last at 0-2-2.

I’ll be back with notes and quotes soon.

Attendance: Sellout crowd of 20,438.

80th minute: Burch in, Evans out.

78th minute: Portland’s Rodney Wallace equalizes off of Jack Jewsbury corner kick, jeader just trickles across goal mouth. 1-1.

73rd minute: Trainer out checking on Franck Songo’o, who is down. He’s had a nice match. Replaced by Danny Mwanga.

70th minute: Mario Martinez in for Steve Zakuani.

57th minute: GOAL Seattle. Portland reserve keeper is in for literally seconds when Fredy Montero sends a goal in over his head. Seattle, 1-0. Assist to Gspurning. First assist for Sounders goalkeeper since Kasey Keller assisted Montero, Aug. 8, 2010 vs. Houston.

57th minute: Collision between Eddie Johnson and Donovan Ricketts sends Ricketts to the bench. Reserve Joseph Bendik in.

Second half: … is under way.

Halftime: Scoreless.

Shots, 8-7 SEA; on goal 1-0 PORT; corners 1-0 PORT; duels 50%; possession 55% PORT.

30 minutes: Scoreless. Mostly even.

Yellow to Johnson: Wildly unnecessary midfield yellow card to Eddie Johnson. That one means he’ll have to sit out next Saturday when San Jose visits CenturyLink.

First 20 minutes: Still scoreless. Seattle getting into the game more. 50-50 for now.

First 10 minutes: Feels like the rivalry it is. Very loud. Very physical. No score, but early minutes tilted Portland’s way, as might be expected early considering the environment.

Kickoff: We’re under way in Portland.

Sounders' supporters pregame presence at Jeld-Wen Field.

Lineups: Sounders starters: GK Gspurning; D Johansson, Parke, Hurtado, Gonzalez; M Evans, Alonso, Rose, Zakuani; F Montero, Johnson. Bench: Ford, Scott, Burch, Martinez, Ianni, Caskey, Ochoa.

Here’s what Timbers have tweeted: Ricketts; Kimura, Mosquera, Horst, Wallace; Nagbe, Jewsbury (c), Chara; Zizzo, Dike, Songo’o. And these reserves: Bendik, Danso, Alexander, Alhassan, Boyd, Fucito, Mwanga.

First kick: We are told now that actual first kick will be at 12:51. Sorry. All I had heard all week was 12:30, but I guess that’s just the start of the network broadcast.

Pregame: Have arrived at Jeld-Wen Field for today’s big Cascadia Cup match between Sounders and Timbers.

Basics: 12:30 kickoff, on NBC and usual radio networks. I’ll keep this blog open all day with pregame, in-game and postgame reports. I’ll also have updated on Twitter @donruiztnt.

More to come soon, including lineups.
