The Sounders were predictably impressed and happy with the U.S. national team’s 1-0 win at Mexico City yesterday.

Here are some reactions from three Sounders with former national team experience:

Obviously a historic result for the U.S. I’ve been down there a couple of times, involved with national teams. Probably the most memorable one – because it was a Gold Cup final — in ’93, but we got thrashed 4-0, so that wasn’t a lot of fun. It’s a lot nicer to be on the other end of it. I think it also was a good (advertisement) for MLS, because he had a lot more MLS players involved than he did European players at the time, so it was a good mixture on the field, and obviously the result was very good. It’s important because the message as you move forward in qualifying – and you’re going to run into Mexico in real qualifying games – it’s a message that’s important.

It was just amazing. Sigi and I watched it together, both of us had been in that experience of being in Azteca, it wasn’t full this time, but that atmosphere is amazing. To go there, the Mexican teams are so confident. Their record against us, well, until last game they were undefeated. So a great confidence for U.S. soccer now to be able to go into a qualifying and know that we’ve at least won in this stadium. It was a great feeling as a former national team player to pull for our team and have us pull out the victory.

I thought it was a great result. Anytime you make history, it’s a great achievement for our country, for the national team, what is says about the growth in soccer in America. And part of that has to do with having a professional and stable league here. MLS has gotten better over the years, and our American players are playing consistently over in Europe. But I thought it was a good performance. Our team was well organized, put in a good shift for 90 minutes, and they defended really well, and when they got their chance they took it. So, hats off to those guys. Like I said, I think that game is only going to give us – as a national team and as a country – more confidence in going down and playing against a great team like Mexico with more confidence in the future.
