Weary Sounders turn attention to San Jose

In a conference call from the Bay Area this morning Sounders coach Sigi Schmid said:

* He’ll likely field an unusual lineup tomorrow against San Jose, a mix of weary regulars and less-used guys for what will be the Sounders’ fourth game in 10 days.

* The standings point to this as an important game for Seattle in the Supporters Shield race. However, Schmid says he’s more interested in winning the series against each club — and that mandates a win or draw tomorrow, as the Quakes won the first of the three meetings. Schmid says Supporters Shield is secondary to MLS Cup — and all the more now with the unbalanced schedule. However, both of those have gained importance as possible paths to the 2013 CONCACAF Champions League, now that the U.S. Open Cup path is lost to them.

* San Jose leads the league (by a lot) in late and stoppage-time goals. Schmid says that isn’t just a fluke of timing, but instead indicates a deep team that plays hard the whole way.

More soon.
