Wind, not altitude, was factor in match

Here’s what coach Sigi Schmid had to say about playing in mile-high altitude last night in Commerce City, Colo.

“The decision to (have All-Stars Eddie Johnson and Osvaldo Alonso) come back to Seattle was we didn’t want them at altitude for 48 hours. We know that altitude, between 48 and 72 hours is when it has its biggest impact on you. Every time we’ve played up here we’ve never talked about the altitude or anything like that. This year all of a sudden it became a topic of discussion. I prefer not talk about it and just getting out there

Rapids “in pain” after 2-1 loss to “good team”

Here’s some reaction from the Colorado Rapids after their 2-1 loss to Seattle tonight — a result that matched the club record six-game losing streak.

Coach Oscar Pareja
His opening thoughts:
First of all I want to direct these words to the Colorado Rapids fans: we are feeling so bad, mostly because the support that the team, the players felt from the fans, is incredible. Despite the moment, despite the bad results, despite this situation when we run out of answers, the Colorado Rapids fans are there, pushing. Giving us a great example of courage. We feel it. I

Johnson: This goal sweeter than vs. Chelsea

Within a handful of game minutes — stoppage time Wednesday and the second minute tonight — forward Eddie Johnson sent the MLS All-Stars past Chelsea and started the Sounders on their way to tonight’s 2-1 win at Colorado.

He was asked which goal he enjoyed more.

“You’re only known for your last game, and I enjoyed this game more,” he said. “This game means something. The Chelsea game is more for the fans and the city of Philadelphia

Gspurning says he’s physically well, needs more games to get back to point before injury

Here’s a bit about what Michael Gspurning had to say after going the whole way in Seattle’s 2-1 win at Colorado — his first appearance since suffering a hip injury May 2 against LA.

“I need a couple of games more to get to the point where I was before the injury. But from a physical standpoint I have to say thank you to the trainers, to the doctors, the coaches: They brought me back to this point where I can play now. It was a very long injury. Too long, of course, but I’m pretty happy that I’m back now.

On Colorado’s goal in the third minute: My shutout after coming back was exactly two and a half minutes. But We have to watch the video. I think the ball was a pretty good ball coming to the middle, but we can’t let it through like this. For me also maybe it was quick. But after everything we go home with three points, and maybe next time we take an early lead we don’t concede the equalizer so quick.

Schmid: Good first half, then just good enough

Here was coach Sigi Schmid’s overview take after the Sounders’ 2-1 win tonight at Colorado.

“I was happy with how we played in the first half. Our goal was to be able to hold onto the ball and possess the ball, knock it around and be patient with our attack, and I thought we did that. Obviously we got a good early goal, but then we gave that goal back right away. We had some chances. I thought our final pass sometimes wasn’t what we needed it to be. But overall, I was pleased with what we did in the
