The Sounders have announced the trade of designated player Alvaro Fernandez to Chicago for allocation money.

(Here is some of what Fernandez had to say earlier this week, when it seemed he might be transferred to Colombia, rather than traded to Chicago.)

And there certainly could be another shoe to drop, as the Sounders earlier today confirmed “advanced negotiations” with German midfielder Christian Tiffert.

But first things first. Here’s the release from the Sounders:

Seattle Sounders FC has traded midfielder Alvaro Fernandez to the Chicago Fire in exchange for allocation money, the club announced today.

“We would like to thank Alvaro for his contributions to the club over the last two years and wish him well in the next chapter of his career with the Fire,” said Owner and General Manager Adrian Hanauer.

Fernandez, 26, joined Sounders FC midway through the 2010 season. In his two and a half seasons in MLS, Fernandez has scored 13 goals with three assists in 55 matches (starting 38). He was second on the club with nine goals in 2011 and has scored twice in the 2012 campaign. He added three goals and five assists in CONCACAF Champions League play, including the winner in Seattle’s historic win at CF Monterrey on August 23, 2011. Overall, Fernandez scored 16 goals and 10 assists in all competitions for Sounders FC.

Fernandez has been capped 11 times by Uruguay and made four appearances in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He began his professional career in Uruguay with Atenas in 2006 and joined Montevideo Wanderers a year later. He also played for Mexico’s Puebla, Uruguay’s Nacional, Portugal’s Vitoria Setubal and on loan with Chile’s Universidad before signing with MLS in the summer of 2010.

Sounders FC returns to MLS action on Saturday with a road match against the Colorado Rapids. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. PT at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo.

Transaction: Seattle Sounders (MLS) – Traded MF Alvaro Fernandez to Chicago Fire in exchange for allocation money.

And here’s the news from the Fire:

The Chicago Fire Soccer Club announced Friday that the club has acquired Alvaro Fernandez from Seattle Sounders FC in return for allocation money. Fernandez will occupy a Designated Player slot and is expected to join the team in San Jose prior to the Fire’s match against the San Jose Earthquakes at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. on Saturday, July 28 at 9:30 p.m. CT (NBC 5.2/97.5 ESPN Deportes). Per team and MLS policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Fernandez becomes the second Designated Player added to the Fire’s roster in the past week, as Dutch striker Sherjill MacDonald was signed by the club Tuesday.

“Alvaro is an experienced player that has proven himself as an offensive weapon in MLS,” said Fire Head Coach Frank Klopas. “He is a versatile player and can occupy a number of positions in the midfield. This addition strengthens our squad as we enter the second half of the season.”

Fernandez joined Sounders FC in 2010 and tallied 13 goals in 55 MLS Regular Season matches.

Fernandez made his professional debut with Uruguayan side Montevideo Wanderers in 2006. He appeared in 43 games over three seasons, starting 40 games and adding three goals. In 2008 Fernandez joined Mexican side Puebla, where he started 12 matches before returning to Uruguay and signed for Nacional for the remainder of the 2008 season. In 2009, he started eight matches and scored three goals with the Montevideo-based squad.

While with Nacional, Fernandez was loaned to Chile’s Universidad in 2010 where he appeared in 11 games with nine starts, scoring one goal.

“El Flaco” joined Major League Soccer in July 2010 becoming the third Designated Player in Sounders history. In his three seasons with Sounders FC, Fernandez has appeared in 80 matches across all competitions, scoring 16 goals and adding 10 assists. He has helped the Rave Green win the 2010 and 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup trophies.

Fernandez, 26, has been capped for Uruguay 11 times, including four appearances in 2010 FIFA World Cup Qualifying.

  1. Fernandez clearly had a discipline issue for the past twelve months and was a thorn in sigis side. He had to go. A real head case.

  2. dadzo188 says:

Flaco was not a discipline issue for the Sounders. Sigi has shown that he has problems dealing with players south of our border. Fernandez is a very skilled player who will be missed.

The new player Tiffert has some big expectations awaiting.
