MLS All-Stars face Chelsea tonight; Schmid wishes limited minutes for Sounders Alonso, Johnson

MLS All-Stars Thierry Henry, Dwayne De Rosario, head coach Ben Olsen and Landon Donovan, and Frank Lampard, Jon Mikel Obi and manager Roberto Di Matteo, pose with the MLS All-Star Giant Ball in front of Independence Hall in Philadelphia.

The MLS All-Stars will face Chelsea FC at 5:30 p.m. today at PPL Park in Chestern, Penn., home of the Philadelphia Union.

Sounders FC will be represented by midfielder Osvaldo Alonso and forward Eddie Johnson. (Fredy Montero was named today as an inactive All-Star and will not be at PPL Park.)

Like most MLS coaches, Seattle’s Sigi Schmid voiced mixed emotions about the match: on one hand saying more Sounders should be there, and on the other hand hopeful that the two players’ All-Star duties don’t negatively impact the Sounders regular season.

“Both of those guys have played a lot of minutes over the last two months, so (missing Sounders training is) not so bad,” he said. “Hopefully they won’t play a ton of minutes on Wednesday because our team is a little different than the other teams. We have an Open Cup final in mid-week, we have a CONCACAF game mid-week, so we have more games than the other guys, so hopefully they’ll take that into account.”

Here’s the localized preview that appeared in today’s News Tribune.
