Last week, Sounders general manager Adrian Hanauer and coach Sigi Schmid downplayed – but didn’t quite deny – international internet rumors that Sounders midfielder Alvaro Fernandez might transfer to Deportivo Cali of Colombia.
Fernandez took a similar approach when asked today.
“This isn’t anything new,” he said. I’ve been a professional soccer player for a while, and there are always going to be rumors about this team or that team. But I’m really happy playing here in Seattle. I love the city, I love this team. And if something comes along that’s great for everybody, then we’ll look at it. But right now I’m just happy and focused on playing for the Sounders.”
A little more from Flaco:
On how involved he gets with such career issues: “I sometimes find about things from the internet, because really my manager is the one who’s taking care of the information, and the club here and the club who might be interested. But I really don’t have much to do in that regard, and so I just focus on soccer.
On recent improved play: Luck’s been in my favor. I’ve been working hard all season, and the chances were just in my favor when I was able to head one in, and then the other goal. So I think it was just a combination of just to keep doing what I’m doing and to have luck on my side
