Silverbacks named for Zoo Atlanta’s gorilla collection; including Tacoma’s famous Ivan

The Atlanta Silverbacks — the Sounders opponent tomorrow in U.S. Open Cup — play their soccer a long way away from Puget Sound. But they have three local connections. Two of their players are from around here: Raphael Cox of Tacoma and Ciaran O’Brien of Federal Way.

However, even the club nickname has a local link. The “Silverbacks” name and logo honor Zoo Atlanta, which has the nation’s largest gorilla collection. Among them is Ivan, who spent much of his life in a Tacoma department store before finding company and a more natural environment in Georgia.

(Yes, even more natural than a department store.)
