The third round of the U.S. Open Cup got off to a fascinating start tonight as 14 MLS clubs joined the tournament in the third round, and half of them won’t live to see the fourth round.

The results:

Richmond Kickers 1, D.C. United 2
Harrisburg City Islanders 3, New England Revolution 3 (Harrisburg advances on PKs.)
Carolina RailHawks 2, LA Galaxy 1
Michigan Bucks 3, Chicago Fire 2
Tampa Bay Rowdies 1, Colorado Rapids 3
Columbus Crew 1, Dayton Dutch Lions 2
Charleston Battery 0, New York Red Bulls 3
Philadelphia Union 3, Rochester Rhinos 0
FC Dallas 0, Charlotte Eagles 2
San Antonio Scorpions 1, Houston Dynamo 0
Sporting Kansas City 3, Orlando City 2
Real Salt Lake 1, Minnesota Stars FC 3
Ventura County Fusion 0, Chivas USA 1
San Jose Earthquakes 2, Ft. Lauderdale Strikers 1

Details available at MLSsoccer.com and the U.S. Soccer website.

Two more MLS teams enter the tournament Wednesday: Portland Timbers, who will host Cal FC at 7:30 p.m.; and, of course, Sounders FC, which will meet the Atlanta Silverbacks at Starfire Sports Stadium at 7 p.m.

Here is something Sounders coach Sigi Schimd said earlier in the day when asked if MLS teams were taking the tournament more seriously:

“I think more are taking it seriously from the standpoint that they know it gets you into the Champions League…Now that people see that it’s a vehicle to get in to the Champions League, I think teams look at it a little more seriously. Each team has to manage it as to where their players are at this present moment, and that will determine the team they put on the field.”

Just caught the end of them after a way too long meeting. The craziest was the Harrisburg Islanders over Revs. All 6 goals in ET. Goes to penalties & they take down NE.

Love this tournament although I still think it was more fun in the early rounds being the minnow club knocking off MLS teams.
