U.S. Open Cup kicks off; Sounders enter later

The 2012 U.S. Open Cup kicks off tonight. The 16 U.S.-based MLS teams — including three-time defending champion Sounders FC — join the competition in Round 3, two weeks from tonight.

Here’s a quick overview from the Sounders:

Road to the Cup
The 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup begins this week with the first and second rounds. The 16 U.S.-based MLS teams enter in round three in late-May.

The 99th edition of the U.S. Open Cup includes a 64-team field, which represents to largest in the modern era (1995-present). The first-round matches kick off on Tuesday, May 15, and second-round games are scheduled for Tuesday, May 22. The third round is slated for May 29.

The third-round matches will be based on geographic proximity. The Kitsap Pumas play at home against Cal FC (May 15, 7:15 p.m. at Bremerton Memorial Stadium) and the Portland Timbers U-23s host PSA Elite (May 15, 7:30 p.m. at JELD-WEN Field). The winner of the Kitsap match will visit the Wilmington Hammerheads (USL PRO) and the Timbers-PSA Elite victor will travel to play the Carolina Railhawks.

The quarterfinals are set for June 26, the semifinals for July 10, and the final for August 7 or 8.
