Fredy Montero scored the only goal today as the Sounders won a 60-minute training game against the Washington Huskies at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila.
However, the main issue was getting work for the Sounders starters during this bye week, and especially getting some game-conditions work for Mauro Rosales and Adam Johansson, as each tries to build back from injury. Rosales played all 60 minutes, and Johansson 30, and afterward each seemed optimistic that they will be able to return to league play a week from today when the Sounders visit Chicago.
Here’s some reaction from coach Sigi Schmid:
On Rosales and Johansson: We told them both you’ll go 30 minutes, let us know if you want to go more. Adam felt he didn’t want to go beyond the 30: He felt pretty good, he just wanted to run and do fitness work, so he did. Mauro decided he felt all right and wanted to go the whole 60. So it was good, especially because we didn’t ease down yesterday’s practical all that much. We did a normal practice … so between yesterday’s practice and today’s 60 minutes, it was pretty good at replicating what a game would be like over the weekend.
On if he expects them ready for league play next week: We’ll see. When you go through a thing like this the key test is how do you feel the next day. Are you getting little aches and pains? Becaue, you know, through the game your adrenaline starts flowing, you feel good and you get caught up in the emotion of the game, and it’s only afterward sometimes that you go home and go, ‘Oh, I forgot when I got kicked there,’ or ‘I’m sore here.’ So … for me to predict today is tough. I’ve got to see how they feel tomorrow, see how they feel Tuesday.
On the value of the scrimmage in other ways: It was a good run for us. I thought we created some good chances. I thought we moved the ball around pretty well. Still disappointed, obviously, in our finishing. It was good to see Fredy get one. It was a little fortunate, the goalkeeper didn’t do well with it, but we’ll take anything right now. I think our combinations (were) good, we got some crosses, we were right on the doorstep. But I thought our flow and our movement through midfield was pretty good.
Here’s some of what Johansson has to say:
“It felt good. But I’m building it up, so this was a great training for me. That’s how I see it: building it up for next week. … I think I can play (next week).”
“I feel good. It was 60 minutes – intense 60 minutes that I could play after a long time. It was good. My knee is still (recovering), but it was a good step to try against the other guys that make me make some extra effort that I don’t make when I’m training. It’s OK. It’s within the time that the doctors said to me that it’s going to be. I’m looking forward for the next week.
“I hope (I’ll play against Chicago). I hope so. I really don’t like to be on the outside and watch the game (as a spectator). I hope next weekend I will be with the guys. I will try like always.
“Of course we have to try it one time (before a league game). In the training you can control yourself. Your teammates know that you have pain and maybe they come in a little bit easier than normal. But this guy, they try it other ways. It really was physical, and I could train my fitness in the game. Try to be back also in all aspect: in mental and physical.”
