The Sounders are 3-1-1 on the season … and yet Fredy Montero hasn’t scored a goal.

We spoke with him a bit about that after today’s 1-0 win against Colorado.

“I’m worrying,” he said. “That’s what I love to play and score goals. But at the end of the season, who is the top leading scorer is Fredy. That’s me. Right now I’m worry about the team. I’m playing another position – I’m coming from back with the ball. I’m trying always to play forward. … Right now I’m happy how the team is winning this game. It’s always very nice to feel that: winning at home with 38,000 people.”

On playing with Eddie Johnson: Eddie is a great player. He’s very smart. You see out there how he was running off the ball. He’s going to help the team. We just need to score the first goal, and then we are going to keep scoring goals for this team.

  1. EverydayFan says:

DR – I think Montero’s meaning of of the word “worry” may be getting a bit misconstrued in translation here….
I look at what he said as “I’m not worried about me, I’m worried about the team right now.”
Which means, I’m not putting myself or my own statistics first, I’m putting the team first. I’m playing a different role, as long as Rosales is out, where I pick up the ball deeper, and create for others.”
In other words, he’s playing like a captain, because that’s what his team needs … And they are winning because of it.
    Good on you, Montero.

  2. Fredy is giving most of his interviews in English this season, and while his English is very good, there could occasionally be a lack of precision in word choice. From tone and body language as he spoke, I think he’s certainly aware he hasn’t recorded a goal yet and certainly wants to get started. But I think something in the “anxious/eager” range is closer to his tone than “worry.”
