Sounders coach Sigi Schmid was asked today about the Friday incident in which Houston Dynamo midfielder Colin Clark directed a gay slur at a ballboy during Seattle’s 2-0 win at CenturyLink Field.

“I didn’t know of it until late,” Schmid said. “In fact, (Houston coach) Dominic Kinnear called me to talk to me an apologize about it, and I didn’t even know what had gone on, and that was Saturday morning. … It’s not something that should happen in the game, within the game, on the soccer field. With ballboys there it shouldn’t happen. But in terms of what happens now with regard to Clark, if there’s anything, that’s a league decision. But certainly it’s not the kind of behavior that we want to see from any of the players in our league.”

Classy response … no surprise there (both coaches included).

Sigi and the team have to take a hands off approach to this because anything would seem caddy. I’ve seen a few comments posted about disappointment in the Sounders not being more “outraged,” but I think Sigi’s comments show it’s up to the league and, clearly, that it does matter.

Glad to see them both taking the high road. Classy reaction to a classless act. Worth learning from.
