Burch takes blame for Lenhart foul and PK

The key moment of Seattle’s 1-0 loss to San Jose tonight came when defender Marc Burch was whistled for knocking down Quakes forward Steven Lenhart in the penalty area. That led to a Chris Wondolowski PK, the game’s only goal.

Lenhart has a reputation for trying to goad and distract players into mistakes. Coach Sigi Schmid spoke of it in the days leading up to the game.

Here’s what they had to say after the match:

Gspurning talks about PK … and joining attack

Here’s some of what Sounders goalkeeper Michael Gspurning had to say after tonight’s 1-0 loss to San Jose:

On trying to stop a penalty kick from Chris Wondolowski without knowing his tendencies) Of course it’s better to know players from a long time. Yeah, it’s new. But I mean in a penalty you also have to be lucky. I mean, I feel no pressure. The striker has the pressure. He has to score. On the other hand, of

Schmid overview, and update on injuries

Here’s Sigi Schmid’s overview of tonight’s 1-0 loss to San Jose:

On the result) “Sometimes games go like that a little bit. I didn’t think our first half was outstanding. I thought they were a little better than us in the first half. I didn’t think, from my angle, that it was necessarily a PK. I thought it was sort of what they say in basketball when you initiate the contact kind of thing. I thought in the second half we were better. I thought we created more chances in the second half. [San Jose Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon] Busch comes

Rosales, Johnson, Johansson all out for Saturday; Schmid says Evans is game-time decision

The 2-0 Sounders are using every bit of their considerable depth already this season, and it looks like it will be the same Saturday when the San Jose Earthquakes visit CenturyLink Field.

Here’s an update from coach Sigi Schmid:

On forward Eddie Johnson: “For us right now, the main thing is to get Eddie Johnson healthy, to get him fit. So our decision this week is to really work on his fitness. He did a lot of work yesterday and today as well. We’ve got a little reserve game Sunday against Gonzaga, so he’ll probably play some minutes in that. So that’s what we want to do first. And once he’s fit and he’s well that way, he’ll get time on the field.

On midfielder Brad Evans and defender Adam Johansson) “I think they both Read more »
