USA women’s national team star Alex Morgan will join Hope Solo and Sydney Leroux on the Sounders Women this season “pending official USSF/CSA approval.”

“Alex is a world-class player who has proven herself well beyond her 22 years,” Sounders Women general manger Amy Carnell said in a press release. “Her breakout World Cup performance sets the stage for what will be an exciting Sounders Women’s season.”

Morgan has 32 appearances and 16 goals for the US Women’s National Team since making her debut in 2010. The Californian was the youngest player on the USA 2011 FIFA World Cup team.

“I am excited to play in a city that is so passionate about soccer,” she said in the release. “The Sounders have been one of if not the best fan support in MLS. I can only imagine how Seattle fans would respond to having a full professional women’s team in the future.”

She also tweeted the news (top) to her Twitter followers.

Morgan is the longtime girlfriend of Sounders FC midfielder Servanco Carrasco. She also recently appeared in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.

The Sounders Women are operated by the same Pierce County group that owns and operates Sounders FC U23s, formerly the Tacoma Tide.

The Sounders Women’s season runs through the summer, with home games played at Starfire Sports Stadium in Tukwila. Carnell said the national team players will be available for a total of three home friendly matches and four home league matches.

Here’s the news release.

I wonder if these splashy signings mean Sounders Women is going to play first division next year when WPS resumes. Or maybe it’s just their obvious connections to the area.

Either way, I’m looking forward to catching a few games with my niece.

I wondered about that too, but I haven’t heard any indication of that from either Sounders FC or the owners of Sounders Women/Sounders U23s.
