Northwest soccer legend Alan Hinton is a former coach of the NASL and A-League Seattle Sounders as well as the NASL Tacoma Stars.

So he was a logical person to speak with today, when the two cities formed another link with the PDL Tacoma Tide becoming Sounders FC U-23.

“I think it’s another step in the growth of the club,” Hinton said this morning after watching the Sounders training session. “The infrastructure is getting very strong, with reserves, academy teams, connections with all youth soccer and now this under-23 team.

“I think it’s wonderful that the club is getting involved, because at the end of the day, Tacoma has been a great area of growth with the Sounders: Mark Peterson, Jeff Stock, Jeff Durgan, and many other players. This is a great club. It’s going places.

“I loved it when I was in Tacoma, because when we started hitting the jackpot with the Stars it was because we had already won the hearts of the Tacoma fans. Then we started getting fans from Seattle coming to Tacoma. Those were great days.”
