USA names MLS-heavy roster for January schedule

U.S. men’s national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann has named 20 players to the training camp roster that will run from Jan. 3-26.

Eighteen of the selections are from MLS, though none from Seattle.

Here is the roster:

Notes: Postseason honors, Tetteh, key dates, more

Sounders FC Nominated for Seattle Sports Star of the Year Awards

Sounders FC has been nominated by the Seattle Sports Commission as the Sports Story of the Year for winning their third straight U.S. Open Cup. The four other nominees include Eastern Washington University’s FCS National Championship, the Seattle Seahawks playoff win over the New Orleans Saints, U.S. Women’s Soccer making the World Cup Final and University of Washington Crew winning the national title.

Kasey Keller also received a nomination for Professional Sports Star of the Year as he completed his 20-year professional career as the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2011. The list of nominees includes Dallas Mavericks guard Jason Terry, Seattle Mariners pitcher Brandon League, hydroplane driver Dave Villwock and Seahawks safety Earl Thomas.

Fans can vote for their favorite nominee by visiting SeattleSports.org. Individuals can vote up to once a day. Winners will be announced during the show on Wednesday, January 25, 2012, at Benaroya Hall in downtown Seattle.


Michael Tetteh Returns from Generation adidas Tour of Netherlands

Sounders FC defender Michael Tetteh joined 17 other emerging MLS stars for a 10-day tour of the Netherlands that concluded last week. The Generation adidas team won once and lost twice in their three matches and Tetteh made two starts for 109 minutes of action. Read more »

Sounders check out 67 prospects in the desert

Hi, remember me? Thanks for sticking around through my week-long absence. (I don’t expect to be gone for that long a stretch again until at least after the 2012 season.) Despite trying to pick a relatively light week on the MLS calendar, several things happened while I was away. Sounders sign Rosales to multi-year deal

The man who made the Seattle Sounders FC offense go last season is going nowhere for the foreseeable future.

The Sounders on Tuesday announced a new multi-year contract with midfielder Mauro Rosales, who established a team record for assists in his first season in Seattle.

Per MLS and club policy, terms were not disclosed.

“We were always very confident of reaching an agreement,” said Sounders general manager Adrian Hanauer.

Sounders transfer Friberg to Swedish team

Sounders FC midfielder Erik Friberg has been transferred to Malmö FF of Sweden’s top flight, the team announced this afternoon.

Per MLS and club policy, terms of the transfer will not be disclosed.

“Erik is starting a young family, and he feels it would be best to do so close to home,” said general manager Adrian Hanauer. “This move enables the couple to be near their families and have the proper support.”

Friberg is a native of Göteborg, Sweden and played his first five professional seasons for BK Häcken (2007-10) and Västra Frölunda IF (2005-06). Malmö, winner of a record

Sounders take defender Marc Burch in re-entry draft

The Seattle Sounders say hello to defender Marc Burch today, and good bye to Nate Jaqua and Pat Noonan during the second phase of the MLS re-entry draft.

Burch, a former member of D.C. United, was taken with the first overall pick by the Sounders, who acquired the pick by exchanging positions with the Vancouver Whitecaps, sending a third round selection in the 2014 SuperDraft for the right to move up. Jaqua and Noonan were chosen by the New England Revolution and L.A. Galaxy, respectively.
